Abstract
Scutumplasty is a repair of bony canal wall defect after intact canal wall mastoidectomy or atticotomy and it is well known that cartilage or bone would be suitable for scutumplasty. However, because of variable figures of scutum, it is not easy
to
align the cartilage properly. Therefore many method for aligning the scutum have been developed, for instance, pararell incision or slicing the cartilage plate.
Crushing is the simplist to produce thin cartilage and to remove the unnecessary tension, because all frameworks of the cartilage are compressed towards all possible directions through the crushing.
The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical usefulness of the rushed cartilage plate in scutumplasty. The features of scutum was evaluated using human temporal bone to find any measuredable parameters and clinical application of curshed
cartilages was performed in 33 cases of the middle ear surgery. The detatiled technique and its grounds are described. (Korean J Otolaryngol 39 : 2, 1996)
